Man City appeal could drag into 2027 if new rules are challenged

The Man City appeal 2027 story has a new twist. Sky Sports reports that City’s case could run on into next year if the club argues the new fast-track appeal rules do not apply to them. Nothing is confirmed, and City have not yet said they will make that argument.

Why the Man City appeal 2027 timeline could slip

City have until Friday to file their appeal. Under the new Premier League rules, this stage must finish within 12 weeks, and the hearing can last no longer than five days. However, Sky Sports says City’s lawyers could argue those rules should not apply. The club was charged in 2023 and heard in 2024, before the fast-track process was in the Handbook.

A legal expert told Sky Sports News that City would have a strong case on that point. The rules were brought in so clubs are, where possible, punished in the same season as the breach. Therefore, a challenge to them could push the Man City appeal 2027 process well past the date many expected.

What Sky’s reporter says about the Man City appeal 2027 dates

Football365 quotes Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol on the confusion. He said the new rules would normally mean a hearing before Christmas and a judgement in January. He added: “I’m now not so sure that is the case.” In addition, he said City could argue that “you can’t move the goalposts during the game”. That is his description of a possible argument, not a filing.

What it means for City’s season

For City supporters, the practical question is how long the club lives with uncertainty. Solhekol expects a decision on any sanction well before the end of this season, and says the sanctions hearing is likely to come before the appeal. The appeal itself goes to a new three-person panel. A longer appeal would not necessarily change that sanctions timetable, but it would leave the verdict open for longer.

What happens next

The next step is Friday’s deadline. Meanwhile, the commission found City broke financial rules by disguising £830.69m of owner funding as sponsorship income, and the club denies any wrongdoing. We will update the Man City appeal 2027 story when City file. For the funding argument itself, read our report on the Abu Dhabi government funding argument.
