Man City punishment timeline: when City will learn sanctions as lawyer issues appeal warning

by Alex Matthews

Manchester City could learn their punishment for 114 financial rule breaches before the end of the season, with a sanctions hearing now running in parallel to the club’s appeal against last month’s guilty verdict. The independent commission that found City in breach of all but one of the Premier League’s charges will also decide the sanctions, and according to a Football Insider report relayed by the Manchester Evening News, the club are likely to be informed of the outcome during the 2026-27 campaign, even if putting an official date on it remains difficult.

When will Man City learn their punishment?

The Man City punishment timeline has shifted quietly but significantly. Much of the early analysis, including our own look at how the appeal could drag into 2027, pointed towards a process measured in years rather than months. That remains true of the appeal itself, which is not expected to conclude before early 2027, but the sanctions track is separate – and it is moving faster. The three-person commission that delivered the verdict is weighing punishments that range, on the spectrum reported so far, from a substantial fine at one end to expulsion from the Premier League at the other, with the Mirror reporting that City have been warned they could face multiple double-figure points deductions.

What punishment could Man City face?

Points deductions are the sanction most supporters have fixated on, and for good reason: applied mid-season, even a modest deduction would transform the table City currently top. The commission is not bound to a single penalty, though, and the reporting around the hearing suggests a combination – financial penalties alongside a sporting sanction – is firmly on the table. Expulsion remains the nuclear option, one club executives around the league have previously doubted would ever command support, but its presence in the reported range underlines how seriously the commission is treating the breaches.

Why Man City’s appeal faces a high bar

City maintain their innocence and have appealed, but the legal route is narrower than many assume. James Severn, a partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper and member of the London Solicitor Litigation Association, told BBC Sport the appeal is “not simply an opportunity to invite a new panel” to overturn the verdict. City would need to identify a material error of law, principle or fact, or serious procedural unfairness that materially affected the commission’s decision. Severn did note, however, that the Appeal Board holds broad powers – it can allow or dismiss the appeal, vary the decision, or make any other order it considers appropriate.

Inside the club, the mood is said to be calm. Former midfielder Samir Nasri told ActuFoot he messaged chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak last week to offer support, adding: “They’re pretty confident about how it’s all going to wrap up.” That confidence has been a consistent theme from the Etihad throughout the process, even as the guilty verdict landed.

City play on amid the noise

On the pitch, none of it has slowed Enzo Maresca’s side. Saturday’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town – City’s first home league match since the verdict – kept them top of the Premier League, with Phil Foden and Erling Haaland on the scoresheet. The afternoon also offered a glimpse of the fanbase’s mood: the Manchester Evening News spoke to supporters outside the Etihad and found defiance mixed with frustration at the process itself, while one banner in the ground borrowed Frank Gallagher from Shameless to make its point about the coverage.

For now, the football continues on one track and the lawyers on another. But if the reported timeline holds, this is no longer a story about some distant reckoning. City could know where they stand before a ball is kicked next season – and every point they bank between now and then may end up mattering more than anyone at the Etihad would like.
